Kentucky Downs Q&A: Jockey Florent Geroux On Piloting An Unusual Course

Jockey Florent Geroux discusses riding at Kentucky Downs, and how he has to adjust his style for the one-of-a-kind track.

Kentucky Downs is one of North America's most unique tracks, both in layout and schedule. In the Kentucky Downs Q&A video series, we'll speak with on-track and off-track participants in the boutique meet to help viewers better understand the one-of-a-kind venue.

Florent Geroux got his start riding at the courses in his native France, many of which have a similar footprint to Kentucky Downs. As Geroux has shown with his many successes at the track, there's no place like home.

Geroux was the leading rider by earnings at the 2023 Kentucky Downs meet, winning six races and earning $2,800,016. His highlights for the season included a win in the Grade 2 AGS Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes aboard Bay Storm and the Grade 3 Castle Hill Gaming Ladies Turf Stakes aboard Regal Realm.

Geroux was a leading apprentice jockey in France before coming to the U.S. in 2007. He's ridden Hall of Famer Gun Runner, champion Monomoy Girl, Kentucky Derby winner Mandaloun, two Kentucky Oaks winners, and won seven Breeders' Cup races.

On this episode of Kentucky Downs Q&A, Geroux discusses how he has to adjust his riding style and how he communicates with his mounts over the track's hills and valleys, wide final turn, and long home stretch.
