Bleach Won't Do It: Disinfecting For EHV-1
Recently there have been several outbreaks of neurological equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) around the country. The most common form of transmission between horses is direct contact between horses, however contact with surfaces touched by horses with EHV-1 is also a possible transmission method.
Decontaminating any area that a potential EHV-1-positive horse has been, or even a horse who has been in contact with a horse potentially carrying EHV-1, is key. Items such as buckets, tack, brushes and other equipment are potential vehicles for contamination.
Many horse owners use bleach to disinfect, but studies have shown that if dirt and manure are not fully removed, the surface can remain infected.
The recommended cleaning solution is Synbiont Agricultural Wash. The solution does not have the same toxicity to animals that other harsh chemicals present and can disinfect surfaces from a variety of pathogens, including EHV-1, E coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and other dangerous equine diseases.
