Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner American Pharoah's sire, Pioneerof the Nile, was a top class competitor on the racetrack. A Grade 1 winner at two, the son of Empire Maker captured the G1 Santa Anita Derby as a 3-year-old and was second in the G1 Kentucky Derby.
As a stallion, Pioneerof the Nile has also found success, siring G2 Cairo Prince in his first crop and now having a potential Triple Crown winner in his second.
In a recent column for the New York Times, Melissa Hoppert profiles "no ordinary horse" Pioneerof the Nile, and WinStar Farm, which is home to the stallion.
