Cairo Prince

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) Canadian Premier Yearling Sale posted across-the-board gains on Wednesday, topped by a $115,000 (Canadian) Cairo Prince colt.

Hosted at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion, the auction saw a total of 150 horses change hands for revenues of $3,837,700, up from last year's sale when 159 horses sold for $3,184,400.

The average sale price rose to $25,584 from $20,027, while the median price increased to $19,500 from $10,000.

Wednesday's sale-topper, a colt by Cairo Prince, sold to Dr. Robert McMartin, as agent, for $115,000.

The gray or roan colt is the second foal out of the stakes-winning Silent Name mare Hopping Not Hoping. The Ontario-bred's extended family includes Grade 1 winner Wonder Lady Anne L, Grade 1-placed A Mo Ready, Grade 3-placed Margaret Reay, and stakes winners Tour Time, O'Rocky, and Lezendary.

The Woodlands operation of Gail Wood consigned the sale-topper, as agent.

Al and Bill Ulwelling landed the day's second-most expensive offering, a $105,000 Tapiture colt.

The bay colt is out of the winning Arch mare Archerette, whose foals include the stakes-placed Harlan Estate.

Born Ontario, the colt hails from the family of international champion and prominent sire Storm Bird, as well as Canadian champion Northernette, Grade 1 winner Storm Trooper, Grade 2 winner Do It All, and Grade 3 winners Marillette, Stupendous Miss, and Closing Range.

Richard G. Hogan consigned the Taputire colt, as agent.
