Grade 1 winner Circular Quay sires first winner
Freshman sire Circular Quay, a Grade 1-winning millionaire who stands at Journeyman Stud, sired his first winner on Saturday when two-year-old filly Jewel in the Sky drew off by 5 1/2 lengths as the odds-on favorite against maidens at Calder.
Jewel in the Sky broke sharply from the gate and opened up quickly on the field of eight before finishing all alone at the wire of the 4 1/2-furlong heat. The final time was 53.42 over a fast main track. Last out in her career debut on May 26, Jewel in the Sky finished second in a maiden special weight at Calder.
The bay filly was bred in Florida by owner Gilbert G. Campbell from the Awesome Again mare Sunny Again. Jewel in the Sky has earnings of $18,750.
Circular Quay was a multiple graded stakes winner at two, scoring his biggest win in the Grade 1 Hopeful S. at Saratoga. He also won the Grade 3 Bashford Manor S. and was the runner up in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, both at Churchill Downs. He captured the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at three, and returned at four to win the Grade 2 New Orleans H.
He retired to Brent and Crystal Fernung's Journeyman Stud in Ocala, where he currently stands for a fee of $6,500 stands and nurses. Circular Quay is by Thunder Gulch out of the Grade 1-winning juvenile Circle of Life.
