South Carolina Thoroughbred Owners And Breeders Name 2022 Champions by Edited Press Release|01.23.2023|2:47pm Swayin To And Fro The South Carolina Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders' Association (SCTOBA) handed out its 2022 awards at the organization's annual banquet held Saturday, Jan. 21 at the National Steeplechase Museum, located on the grounds of the Springdale Race Course in Camden, S.C.. Here is the complete list of honorees, and a short description of each, for 2022. Older 2022 Male Horse of the Year – Dixie Drawl Dixie Draw, a 7-year-old son of Done Talking out of Golden Pleasant, a Touch Gold mare, raced 13 times in 2022. While he may have recorded only one win, he had 3 second place finishes and 3 thirds while racing in Allowance company earning $79,819. Dixie Drawl was bred by Goree Smith and is currently owned by Mopo Racing. Phil Capuano is his trainer up in Maryland. Older 2022 Mare Horse of the Year – Sweet Home Dixie Sweet Home Dixie is a 7-year-old daughter of Done Talking out of Overdue Slew, a Slew City Slew mare. While ahe only made three starts in 2022, she recorded a win, a second, and a third in Allowance company. She earned $52,800. Sweet Home Dixie was bred by Goree Smith, trained by his brother Hamilton Smith and campaigned in Maryland. Three-Year-Old 2022 Colt/Gelding Horse of the Year – Low Country Dude Low Country Dude, also a son of Done Talking out of Low Country Barbe, a Grand Reward mare, won a maiden special weight race at Laurel Park in March. Not long after that, he suffered a setback but is back in training nearing a start. Low Country Dude also was bred and is owned by Goree and trained by Hammy. Three-Year-Old 2022 Filly Horse of the Year – Swayin to and Fro The star of the South Carolina breeding program in 2022 was unquestionably two-time Stakes winner Swayin to and Fro. In 2018 Goree Smith bred his Warrior's Reward mare, Jungle Lady to his stallion Straight Talking and the result was Swayin to and Fro born in April 2019. As a 3-year-old she won eight of 14 starts accumulating $306, 537 in earnings. Owned by Baxter Racing Stable, she is trained by Mario Serey and competed today in the What A Summer Stakes at Laurel Park. Last year, she won the Safely Kept Stakes and Willa On the Move Stakes, both at Laurel Park. Two-Year-Old 2022 Horse of the Year – Alas and Alack Alas and Alack, a daughter of Done Talking out of the Ride the Storm mare, Havin' A Moan, was a two-time winner in six starts as a 2-year-old last year. She also had a second and two third place finishes. Alas and Alack was bred and is owned by Goree and trained by Hammy Smith. She earned $53,750 last year. Breeder of the Year – Goree Smith For the eleventh time in the past thirteen years, Goree Smith has earned the title as South Carolina's leading breeder. The Smith family has been a major player in the state of South Carolina's breeding and racing scene since the 1940's. At his Elloree Training Center, he prepares both horses and jockeys for their future careers. During 2022, Goree's South Carolina-breds earned $532,668.
