The Breeders’ Cup will honor the most outstanding jockey of the 2014 Breeders’ Cup World Championships with the Bill Shoemaker Award based on competition in the 13 Breeders’ Cup races, October 31-November 1 at Santa Anita Park. So far in the competition Rosie Napravnik leads Frankie Dettori by two points – 15-13 – after her win with Untapable in the Distaff and her second-place finish on Tapiture in the Dirt Mile.

Dettori’s highlights include a win in the Juvenile Turf on Hootenanny and a third in the Juvenile Fillies Turf on Osaila. The only other jockey to score in multiple races was Paco Lopez, who was third in the Dirt Mile with Pants on Fire and fourth in the Distaff with 2013 Juvenile Fillies winner Rio Antonia – earning him four points.

The Shoemaker Award is based on a 10-5-3-1 scoring system on first through fourth-place finishes in each of the 13 Breeders’ Cup World Championships races.

Hall of Fame Jockey Mike Smith is the two-time defending champion of the award. Smith has multiple live mounts on Saturday’s card, including morning line favorites Shared Belief in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic and Judy the Beauty in $1 million DraftKings Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Smith has five points after his Luck of the Kitten finished second in the Juvenile Turf on Friday.

The Bill Shoemaker Award is named in honor of one of the greatest jockeys in the history of Thoroughbred racing. Shoemaker, who captured the Kentucky Derby four times, won more than 8,800 races in a career that spanned more than 40 years. In 1987, at 56, Shoemaker won the Breeders’ Cup Classic aboard Ferdinand.

The Shoemaker Award will be presented in the winner’s circle after the ceremonies for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
