Cast of 'War Horse' play to visit Belmont Park on Friday
Cast members of the Tony Award-winning play “War Horse,” including the puppet Joey, will be visiting Belmont Park on Friday, June 8, the day before I’ll Have Another tries for the Triple Crown in the 144th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes.
Joey, the equine star of the show, will present the trophy for the first race on Friday, which is named in honor of the play, currently at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in Manhattan. Prior to the race, Joey will meet with one of the outrider’s horses in the winner’s circle following the national anthem.
War Horse tells the story of Joey, a boy’s beloved horse who is sold to the British cavalry and shipped to France during World War I. The play won the 2011 Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Direction, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design, in addition to a special Tony Award to the Handspring Puppet Company, which operates the life-sized wooden horses on stage.
