Next to last in the early stages, Dixiana Farms’ homebred Hayes Strike angled five wide in early stretch and uncoiled a torrid rally to wear down the front-runners and snatch victory by a nose in the $300,000 Texas Derby on Monday at Lone Star Park.

Sent off at 7-1 odds under Cristian Torres, the Connect colt was winning for the second time from four starts this year and rebounded with aplomb from a seventh-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) April 8 at Keeneland.

After the victory, jockey Cristian Torres said: "I saw he broke slow and I just gave him some time and stayed after him. When I asked, he exploded for me."
