Ol' Fashion Gal inherited the lead in mid-stretch and gamely held off favored Rainha Da Bateria to win Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar.

Sitting off the pace early, Ol' Fashion Gal and jockey Joe Talamo slipped through an opening on the rail to take the lead and win at odds of 21-1. It was the first stakes win for the 2-year-old Mark Casse trainee.

Don't Blame Me was third. Final time for the turf mile was 1:37.27.

Second time was the charm for Ol' Fashion Gal, who finished tenth in a late September debut before breaking her maiden at Del Mar on Nov. 13. She is owned by Bill and Vicki Poston and was bred in Kentucky by John Oxley.

A daughter of Three Chimneys stallion Sky Mesa out of the Horse Chestnut mare Little Hussy, Ol' Fashion Gal sold for $60,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale last year.

Quotes from connections:

JOE TALAMO (Ol’ Fashion Gal, winner) – “She loves the turf. You can see that. Since they switched her over, she’s two for two. She’s getting better with each race. I had a perfect trip today. I got over (to the rail) and saved ground all the way. Then there was a little opening on the rail; not a big one, but just big enough. She shot right through there. Mark (trainer Mark Casse) is a great guy to ride for. He gives you a lot of confidence. He just says ride ‘em like you know how, then he wishes you luck. You love to ride for a horseman like him.”

MIKE SMITH (Rainha Da Bateria, second) – “I was there with the winner on the turn. He (Joe Talamo on Ol’ Fashion Gal) had the jump on me and he went inside. I was thinking about following him through, but I thought I’d have a better chance going outside and trying to outkick him through the lane. He saved the ground and got it done.”

TYLER BAZE (Don’t Blame Me, third) -- “I had a nice trip with her and she ran good. She’s a nice filly.”

MARK CASSE (Ol’ Fashion Gal, winner) – “Joe (Talamo) rode her just great; he got a perfect trip. I thought this filly’s first race was much better than it looked. The next time she got better and today she was even better. Our other filly (Conquest Artura) was good the first time and today she was a nervous wreck. You just never know.”
