England’s Princess Anne Draws Fire for Horsemeat Comment
While it wasn't exactly "let them eat horse", Britain's Princess Anne has come under fire for a recent speech in which she suggested raising horses for meat, if that's what it would take to improve the welfare of the animals.
Princess Anne made the comment when speaking at a conference for the World Horse Welfare charity, of which she is the president. According to The Guardian, the Princess Royal said in her speech, "Our attitudes to the horsemeat trade and the value of horsemeat may have to change." The princess stated that people might take better care of their horses if they could sell them for meat.
Princess Anne stated further "If that's true then, that they value their horses, they look after them well, because they're in the horsemeat trade … should we be considering a real market for horsemeat and would that reduce the number of welfare cases if there was a real value in the horsemeat sector?"
"I chuck that out for what it's worth because I think it needs a debate," she added.
