Hovdey: John Nerud is a blessing never to be taken for granted

John Nerud

As John Nerud approaches his 99th birthday, Daily Racing Form's Jay Hovdey gets a few words of wisdom from the iconic Hall of Famer, a man who has done just about everything in his equally successful rules as owner, trainer and breeder. As Hovdey says, Nerud is “the living, breathing manifestation of the sport's history through the last half of the 20th century and – if Nerud has it his way – part of the 21st as well.”

“I was a listener to old people,” Nerud said. “Ben Jones taught me how to train horses in just one day. John Gaver became a good friend. And Hirsch Jacobs was the smartest man I ever met in my life.”

All three of Nerud's mentors have long been enshrined in the Hall of Fame, and Nerud  – who recently purchased a yearling in partnership with some buddies – has now assumed the role of mentor to a younger generation.
