Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. is appealing a 10-day suspension handed to him by Oaklawn stewards for an elbowing incident with fellow rider David Cohen during a race on April 5, his agent, Ruben Munoz, told

Santana, leading rider at the Hot Springs, Ark., track from 2013-'18, was suspended the final 10 days of the 2020 race meet, April 17 through May 2, for the incident that took place at the top of the stretch while aboard Steve Asmussen-trained Bank.

Racing to the inside of Cohen-ridden Major Attraction, Santana could be seen on replays jutting his right elbow toward Cohen several times near the three-sixteenths pole as the pair raced in tight quarters. Bank would go on to finish third, with Major Attraction fourth in the six-furlong maiden race.

Both riders were called in to review the films of the race and stewards suspended Santana for “riding carelessly or willfully in a manner that jeopardizes the safety of a horse or jockey, and for carelessly or willfully striking or touching another jockey.”

Cohen, who was not sanctioned, said in a Tweet that Santana's actions were “purely intentional and as malicious as it gets.” Cohen added that Santana directed “some choice words” in his direction during the incident.

Cohen ended Santana's reign as Oaklawn's leading rider in 2019 and is part of a four-way battle with Santana, Joe Talamo and Martin Garcia for the 2020 riding title. Talamo currently leads with 43 wins, with Santana at 41 and Cohen and Garcia with 40 each.

Santana's agent told an appeal of the suspension was submitted April 11. Santana is named to ride in seven races on Thursday and seven on Friday, which was scheduled to be the first day of his suspension.
