Letter To The Editor: NBC’s Preakness Coverage Set Right Tone And Timbre

I think it's very important that we recognize the outstanding coverage of the Preakness race day card broadcast by NBC and Peacock. I waited two days to write this letter, because I wanted a bit of perspective. I felt then, and especially feel now, that the anchor team, and especially analysts Jerry Bailey and Randy Moss, found the right tone and timbre following the tragic fate of Havnameltdown, which affected many fans, including myself, greatly.

A wise man once told me that the definition of broadcasting is “the transfer of information, ideas, and emotion, through electronic media.”  Only the best … and most confident broadcasters can emit true emotion.

It's also important to note that much of the audience watching later on NBC had no idea about the earlier breakdown, and it would have been quite convenient to downplay, or even ignore the tragedy entirely during the network coverage, NBC did not do that.

Tremendous credit to producer Lindsay Schanzer and director Kaare Numme, who I feel, should receive several accolades for their leadership and courage piloting the broadcast.
