UK Horse Racing Club invites public to “Derby Experience”

Anyone who's been to Keeneland for the races this spring must wonder if the University of Kentucky called off all classes. The Lexington racetrack has become the place to see and be seen for UK students.

While many of them are there strictly for social reasons, it's not at all surprising to learn there is a core of students who have a passion for the Thoroughbred industry. Some years ago, these students formed the University of Kentucky Horse Racing Club, and they've met regularly to share their enthusiasm for the industry and gain insights about Thoroughbred racing and breeding from guest speakers at their gatherings.

This Monday night, the general public is invited to join these students in listening to an outstanding panel of speakers who will  reflect on their memories in an event called “Inside Horse Racing: The Derby Experience.”

Confirmed speakers include Kentucky Derby-winning owners Arthur B. Hancock III and Bill Casner; trainer John Ward, who conditioned Monarchos to win the 2001 Derby; and Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron, whose 18 Derby mounts included two winners, Alysheba in 1987 and Go for Gin in '94. Mike Penna of the Horse Racing Radio Network will moderate.

Listening to what the panel has to say will be interesting, but I plan to be there because the enthusiasm from the UK Horse Racing Club members can really lift the spirits and remind us that our game – even with all of its problems — still has a magical attraction to the next generation.

If you're in Central Kentucky, I encourage you to attend, too.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, April 25, in the Grand Ballroom of the UK Student Center.  There will be a silent auction (cash or check only) featuring horse memorabilia as well as items donated by other Lexington businesses. Appetizers and beverages will be served. Tickets are $5 for students and interns and $10 for the general public. Proceeds will benefit Thoroughbred Charities of America and the UK Horse Racing Club.

Event sponsors include Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, UK Student Government Association, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, UK Equine Initiative, Denali Stud, Hallway Feeds and the Horse Racing Radio Network.

Parking will be available in UK Parking Structure #5 on South Limestone across from the UK Student Center and will be free when a voucher is requested at check in. For a map, go to
