Which Old Friends Resident Was Featured In Squid Game?
Season 2 of the global phenomenon Netflix series "Squid Game" was released late last month, which drove many to rewatch the first season in preparation.
In the series premiere, protagonist Seong Gi-hun is a degenerate gambler who hits his local off-track betting facility with the hopes of winning enough money to buy his daughter a birthday gift.
In this scene, Gi-hun bets on two different races, which are displayed on the screen as he cheers his picks on.
Veteran race watchers might notice the replays used in this scene look awfully familiar. Instead of using races from tracks in South Korea, where the story is based and the series was shot, the races were from Aqueduct in New York.
This then prompted the question of which races were used for the scene, and if any horses of note played a small role in this major series.
Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills used context clues from the replays and online research find the answers to those questions, and he shared the results in video format to provide side-by-side analysis and talk his way through the process.
Among the notable horses that can be seen in the two "Squid Game" races is Adventist, a Grade 3 winner who retired to Old Friends Equine Retirement in Georgetown, Ky., and currently resides on one of the operation's satellite farms.
Adventist is the winner of the second race featured on the show, in which Gi-hun hits the winning exacta before losing it all after he leaves the building.
If you've ever wanted to meet a "Squid Game" cast member, this is your chance.
