Crist: ‘Jockey Club Tour on Fox a Missed Opportunity’

Boisterous wins the Man o’War Stakes

Earlier this week, The Jockey Club and Fox Sports released the list of races that make up the 2014 Jockey Club Tour on Fox. The 10-race series begins Feb. 9, with the Grade 1 Donn Handicap.

In his latest column for the Daily Racing Form, Steven Crist criticizes the choice of races in the series, pointing out that other than the Donn, there is only one other race on dirt – the Saratoga Special for 2-year-olds. The bulk of the races are on the turf, with a couple on synthetic surfaces. There are also no races offered for fillies and mares.

Crist points out that it's unclear as to whether the races that are in the series were chosen because of racetracks refusing to reschedule or move races, or because the project got started too late to make any schedule adjustments on the network. However, Crist feels that “Either way, it's the same depressing story of an industry that can't seem to work together to put its best foot forward and accomplish its real goals.”
