Economic Indicators for October Show Increases in Wagering, Purses
Total wagering, purses, and race dates in the U.S. this October were all up from their 2013 levels, according to economic indicators released on Wednesday by Equibase. However, year-to-date statistics show declines as compared to 2013.
Wagering in the U.S. was up 2.72% in 2014 as compared with the same month last year. Year-to-date figures were down though, 2.08%.
Purses for October 2014 rose 11.31% as compared with October 2013; year-to-date figures were down, 0.29%.
The number of race days increased this year, up 0.73%, compared to October 2013. Year-to-date, race days decreased, 2.04%.

The number of races in the U.S. also increased, up 0.46%; however year-to-date showed a decline of 3.70%.
The number of starts in October 2014 did show a decline, down 0.04%; year-to-date figures were also down, 6.01%.
