‘Hopefully 2022′: Laurel Park Hosting Breeders’ Cup Among Maryland Plans

The Stronach Group's Tim Ritvo told the Maryland Senate Budget Committee Wednesday the “master plan” for Maryland racing includes trying to land a Breeders' Cup at Laurel Park, according to a Blood-Horse report.

“It's a real option. We're looking at hopefully 2022,” Ritvo said.

The Stronach Group COO also said a critical part of the plan would be turning the old Bowie racetrack into a world-class training facility. Maryland Thoroughbred Horseman's Association lobbyist Bob Enten told the committee having more race days during the year was a top priority. He suggested 220 days.

Panelists praised the partnership between breeders, horsemen and racetracks that has led to an upswing in several metrics for the Maryland racing industry. The possibility of rebuilding Pimlico was discussed but not in any in-depth way.
