Kentucky Submits Bid to Host 2018 World Equestrian Games
Kentucky submitted a formal bid application to host the World Equestrian Games in 2018. The Bromont/Montreal area in Canada was originally awarded the Games but withdrew due to financial difficulties. Kentucky's bid joins an application from Wellington, Fla., and a resubmission by Canada.
Supporters point to the success of the 2010 games held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, which poured more than $200 million into the local economy, according to U.S. Rep. Andy Barr of Lexington. If successful, it will mark the first time the games make a return visit to a host city. The Fédération Équestre Internationale, the governing body for the World Equestrian Games, will announce the candidate cities Dec. 2 and will make a final decision in June.
The FEI World Equestrian Games are held every four years with the next event taking place in Normandy, France August 23 to Sept. 7, 2014. The Games feature seven disciplines including jumping, dressage and para-equestrian dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting and reining.
