Public Comment Sought On Proposed OTB In New Jersey

The New Jersey Racing Commission is seeking public comment at a July 22 hearing on the prospect of constructing a new off-track wagering facility in Hillsborough, according to a report by MyCentralNJersey.com.

The commission received the completed application for the proposed facility, which would also include a restaurant, June 9. Hillsborough mayor Dough Tomson said the township's prime concern with the OTB would be whether or not the locality would receive property taxes from the facility. Tomson is awaiting a public release of the application, made by the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, to learn more about the details.

Per New Jersey law, the association does not have to pay property taxes on the proposed facility, located along Route 206, for five years, but Darby Development, the group that made the original application last year, had agreed to a Payment in Lieu of Taxes instead.

The last time a public hearing was held about the proposal in mid-2014, most residents were not in favor of the idea.
