Appeals Court Approves Slots At North Florida 'Racetrack'

The 1st District Court of Appeal has ordered state regulators in Florida to allow slot machines at a Gadsden County "racetrack" that accepted wagers on barrel races and flag-drop events.

The Sun Sentinel reports that the 2-1 decision, which was issued late Friday, would allow Gretna Racing in Gadsden County to operate slot machines, reversing a 2013 decision by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to reject Gretna's request for slots.

The decision by the appeals court could have an effect on five counties - Palm Beach, Hamilton, Brevard, Lee, and Washington - in the state that have approved slot machines at pari-mutuel dog or horse tracks.

According to the Sun Sentinel, the ruling could have an impact on a $1 billion deal the state currently has with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Under the agreement, the tribe can stop its payments to the state "if pari-mutuels outside of Broward and Miami-Dade counties start operating slots."
