Texas Judge: Racing Commission ‘Exceeded Authority’ When Approving Instant Racing

A Texas judge ruled Monday that the Texas Racing Commission "exceeded its authority" when it gave its approval to allow racetracks to install Instant Racing terminals earlier this year.

According to a report in the Houston Chronicle, Travis County Judge Lora Livingston ruled against the commission and in favor of the coalition representing groups that run charitable bingo operations. The coalition claimed that Instant Racing would cut into their business.

“Today’s decision is a blow to the Texas Horse industry and thousands of hardworking horse men and women,” Andrea Young, CEO of Sam Houston Race Park said in a statement. “We obviously disagree with the judge’s decision and are considering our options.”
