UPDATED: TVG Unable To Show Opening Weekend Races From Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Churchill Downs and TVG have again clashed over broadcasting rights, according to the Daily Racing Form. Negotiations between the two companies failed this week, and as a result Churchill's opening weekend of the Spring Meet will be shown on TVG2 instead of the regular TVG channel.

Fox Sports has made a deal with Churchill, however, and the races from under the Twin Spires will be shown on “America's Day at the Races,” which will air every race day on either FS1 or FS2. The telecast is produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports.

While FS1 or FS2 carries “America's Day at the Races,” NBCSN – the sports channel affiliated with the NBC broadcast network that televises racing's Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup – has been airing TVG's Trackside Live program from 4-8 p.m. ET Fridays and Saturdays while other sports have been shut down during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

TVG does retain the rights, as part of its 2015 acquisition/merger with HRTV, to show Churchill Downs Inc. (CDI) races on TVG2. Since autumn 2018, TVG and CDI have worked together to feature CDI tracks on TVG's main network. The agreement to work together came after a petulant move by CDI management just before the 2018 Kentucky Derby to deny a media credential to racing analyst, Caton Bredar, a contributor to TVG who had been retained by the local NBC affiliate, WAVE 3 News, to co-host Derby week broadcasts from Churchill Downs. After a public outcry, Bredar's credential was granted.

That incident was followed by talks that led to a thaw between Churchill Downs Inc. and TVG, whose rival advance-deposit wagering companies are battling for market share. But after less than two years, the relationship has chilled.

“We offered the same product and deal to TVG as we did to Fox Sports, but it was rejected,” Churchill spokesman Darren Rogers told the Daily Racing Form. “We welcome and continue ongoing discussions with TVG.”

“We've got a great lineup of major racing and are excited about the return of racing at Santa Anita and Golden Gate in addition to Gulfstream Park and other premier racing content,” said Kip Levin, TVG's CEO. “We're excited that racing is returning to Churchill Downs, too, and we tried very hard to secure the rights to air the Churchill Downs' races, but we were not able to reach an agreement. We're happy to be able to show the Churchill races on TVG2, streaming at TVG.com and and on our app via Amazon Firestick, AppleTV and Roku.”

This weekend's telecast schedule for FS1 and FS2 from Churchill Downs is as follows (Churchill's races will also be shown on TVG2):
