‘An Incredible Talent’: Haskell The Next Big Target For Undefeated Jack Christopher

Jack Christopher (Munnings) wins the Pat Day Mile (G2) at Churchill Downs on 5.6.22. Jose Ortiz up, Chad Brown trainer, Jim Bakke and Gerry Isbister owners.

Jim Bakke and Gerry Isbister's Jack Christopher remained undefeated with an impressive victory on the first Saturday in May. Though it wasn't the Kentucky Derby, the 3-year-old son of Munnings' win in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile could set him up for bigger and better things down the road.

Rating just off the pace set by Pappacap, Jack Christopher dueled with that rival in the stretch before taking command late and drawing away to win by 3 3/4 lengths. The colt completed a mile over Churchill's fast main track in 1:34.81.

Jack Christopher won the G1 Champagne last year as a 2-year-old, and would likely have been the favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile but an injury forced trainer Chad Brown to scratch and send the colt to the sidelines. After surgery to repair a shin fracture, Jack Christopher's return to training didn't some soon enough to allow Brown to enter him in a Derby prep race.

“When we decided to take some extra time with the horse and take him out of consideration for the Derby, the race I spoke to Mr. Bakke about was the Haskell,” Brown told the Thoroughbred Daily News this week. “I told him he wasn't going to make the Derby but the Haskell is really the target. I do think the horse will get a mile and an eighth.”

The Haskell, on July 23 at Monmouth Park, would give Jack Christopher a chance to run against some of the top of his generation. As a prep race, Brown will target the colt to the G1 Woody Stephens Stakes over seven furlongs on June 11, Belmont Stakes day.

“He's very special. He is an incredible talent,” Brown concluded.
