Classic Rock Rolls To Jeblar Victory At Gulfstream

Classic Rock wins the Jeblar Stakes

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing's Classic Rock, winner last time out of the Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3), gamely held off the stakes winner Cautious Giant the length of the stretch under jockey Luis Saez to win Sunday's $75,000 Jeblar at Gulfstream Park.

Trained by Kathy Ritvo, Classic Rock, the 1-5 favorite, covered 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16.33 for his third consecutive victory and sixth in 10 starts.

Classic Rock broke on top and was chased by Early Entry past an opening quarter in :22.10. After a :44.99 half, Cautious Giant drove past Early Entry, engaged Classic Rock entering the stretch from the outside, and the duel was on. Despite a gutsy effort by Cautious Giant, Classic Rock never relinquished the lead and actually pulled away to win by a length at the finish.

“He broke so sharp,” said Saez, who rode Magnum Moon in Saturday's Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs. “I felt at the three-eighths pole I had plenty of horse. Then I saw the other horse (Cautious Giant) and got a little worried. But he fights. He always tries so hard. He's a nice horse.”

A 4-year-old son of MacLean's Music, Classic Rock broke his maiden in December of 2016. He went on to win two more races, including the Roar at Gulfstream in April of last year, before taking time off after finishing 10th in the Woody Stephens (G3) at Belmont Park and fifth in Gulfstream's Carry Back (G3) last July. After five months away from the track, Classic Rock has won three consecutive starts – an optional claimer on Dec. 17, the Gulfstream Sprint and Sunday's Jeblar.

“He ran a great race,” said Ritvo, trainer of Reeves Thoroughbred Racing's 2013 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man. “We want him to have a good year so we're trying to be patient with him.”
