Report: War Story Rabbit Denied Entry To Woodward

War Story and Javier Castellano win the Brooklyn Invitational (Gr II) at Belmont Park

Stewards in New York have denied Grade 1 Woodward Stakes entry to Ron Paolucci-owned runner May B after Paolucci admitted he wanted the horse to act as a rabbit for contestant War Story. The Daily Racing Form reports Paolucci called the stewards to notify them of what he was doing and was surprised the stewards used that information to deny May B the chance to run. Gun Runner is expected to top the field.

The stewards cited a state rule permitting them to deny entry without notice at their discretion. Steward Stephen Lewandowski said the decision came because it was clear the horse was not entered with the goal of winning the race.

As to future decisions in cases of rabbits, the stewards said they “take everything on a case-by-case basis.”

The 7-year-old May B would have come to the Woodward off a second-place finish in a $35,000 claiming race at Del Mar, which followed a starter allowance win at Los Alamitos. He has previously competed in Quarter Horse races.
