Waller: 'Strong Possibility' That Winx Will Make Two Starts In Europe In 2018

Australian supermare Winx could make a pair of starts in Europe next year, reports The Australian. The Street Cry mare, who recently recorded a record-equaling third Cox Plate victory, had already been suggested for a tilt at Royal Ascot in June, but trainer Chris Waller told Ascot media manager Nick Smith that she could have a prep race in Europe in May.

“There is a strong possibility that Winx could run in the Lockinge over the straight mile at Newbury,” Smith said. “That will give her some practice over the straight track of the Queen Anne. The reality is the Ascot mile is a very steep ride, more like nine furlongs."

The Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury is often considered a prep race for the Group 1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot; both are held over a straight track at a one-mile distance. Waller is expected to make a final decision about Winx's European schedule after the George Ryder Stakes in Sydney in March.
