Racing Post: Preakness is the “Lisa Simpson” of the Triple Crown

In analyzing the Kentucky Derby results, the Racing Post gives Animal Kingdom's performance a “decent benchmark” rating of 126+.  It goes on to conclude that the Preakness – the middle child of the Triple Crown – is actually the perfect test for three-year-olds:

“The Preakness is very much the Lisa Simpson of the triple crown races. It's not considered as important as the outspoken, headline-hogging Bart of the Kentucky Derby, yet not ignored altogether by the writers like Maggie's Belmont…

It's the race that proves less is more. The distance is shorter, there is less prize-money, there are always fewer runners and it is a much less sought after prize than the Kentucky Derby, but its record at producing champions speaks for itself.

There is less glory, less hype and less frenzy, but it is fair, there are rarely fluke results and it is the ideal trip for American sophomores of today.”
