Seize The Grey 'Recovered Remarkably Well,' Confirmed For Belmont Stakes
D. Wayne Lukas told bloodhorse.com Tuesday morning that his Preakness Stakes winner Seize The Grey will go forward to the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on June 8.
"He's great, recovered remarkably well," Lukas told bloodhorse.com. "He'll probably have a couple works, we'll decide that as we go."
The 3-year-old son of Arrogate won the G2 Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard, then wheeled back on two weeks' rest to defeat Derby winner Mystik Dan by 2 1/4 lengths in the Preakness Stakes. Owned by the MyRacehorse syndicate, Seize The Grey has won four of his 10 lifetime starts for earnings of $1,819,938.
The Belmont Stakes will be contested at Saratoga this year due to construction at Belmont Park, and will be held at 1 1/4 miles rather than the standard 1 1/2 miles.
Among the likely contenders Seize The Grey may face in the Belmont Stakes are: Sierra Leone (Kentucky Derby runner-up), Fierceness (Florida Derby winner and beaten Kentucky Derby favorite), Honor Marie (eighth in Kentucky Derby), and Antiquarian (winner of G3 Peter Pan). Other possible contenders include: Mystik Dan, Thorpedo Anna (Kentucky Oaks winner), Catching Freedom (fourth KY Derby, third Preakness), Dornoch (tenth Kentucky Derby), Tuscan Gold (fourth Preakness), The Wine Steward (second in G3 Peter Pan), and Mindframe (CD allowance winner).
