An Australian newspaper has revealed text messages between a leading Thoroughbred trainer and members of his stable staff, which were recently charged as the result of an investigation into a doping scandal, indicate that horses that ran in the 2015 Melbourne Cup may have been drugged prior to the race.

According to a report by ABC News, the text messages were originally included in an evidence brief compiled by Racing Victoria. Stewards have been investigating several stables, and within the past month have brought charges against five trainers and three stable employees, alleging doping as far back as 2010.

The Herald Sun was the first newspaper to publish the leaked text messages, which detailed conversations over the alleged illegal administration of sodium bicarbonate - or 'milkshaking' - to horses prior to racing.
