Flameaway 'Definitely' To Be Nominated To Triple Crown; Catholic Boy Put In A 'Solid Effort'
Flameaway returns to the winner's circle after the Sam F. Davis Stakes
The one-two finishers in Saturday's Sam F. Davis, both Flameaway and Catholic Boy came out of the race well, according to drf.com. The winner, Flameaway, lowered the Tampa Bay Downs' stakes record by .01 second in the effort, but was not nominated to the Triple Crown. In order for the 10 points he earned with the Davis victory to officially be assigned to him, Flameaway's owner John Oxley will have to pay a $6,000 late nomination fee by March 19.
“We’ll definitely do that,” said trainer Mark Casse. “It was an oversight. The colt came out of it in great shape. We’ll keep our options open."
The next step for Flameaway, a son of Scat Daddy, could be either the Tampa Bay Derby or the Blue Grass at Keeneland. Catholic Boy, meanwhile, is under consideration for either the Florida Derby or the Louisiana Derby as his final prep race.

“He hung on us a little bit, and that was a first,” said trainer Jonathan Thomas. “But if you look at the big picture, it was a solid effort, considering the ground he lost on both turns and it was his first race in 10 weeks.”
